New Project Support from TÜBİTAK 3501 Program to Asst. Prof. Burak Başaranlar

29 April 2024

It is our distinct pleasure to announce that the project coordinated by Asst. Prof. Burak Başaranlar from the Core Program and entitled “The Debtors of the Republic: The Effects of the 1929 Great Depression on Small Landowners and Societal Discontent 1929-1939” has been funded by TUBİTAK 3501 – National Young Researchers Career Development Program.

This study examines the agricultural indebtedness with a particular focus on the devastating impact of the Great Depression in the 1930s. Studies focusing on Turkey’s economic policies of the 1930s largely focus on the state-led policy of industrialization while dismissing the adverse difficulties faced by small agricultural producers. This study offers an alternative view to the state-centric narratives, scrutinizing the social and economic crisis of the early 1930s through the lens of agricultural proprietors integrated into the market economy. The project proposed will enhance the nature of his interdisciplinary research, allowing him to add economic history into his existing studies on the field.

We congratulate our faculty member for his achievement and wish for the continuation of his success.
