Abstract: In this seminar, Dr. Ahmet Can Kırlıoğlu will delve into his contributions across various aspects of energy conversion technologies, including the development of radiation-induced grafted electrospun membranes for Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (AEMFCs), Fe-N-C catalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs), nitrogen doping on reduced graphene oxide for Li-ion battery anodes, and reduced graphene oxide supported electrocatalysts for PEMFC by pulsed photocatalytic deposition. He will also touch on his contribution to computational analysis of the role of cathode catalyst morphology in the degradation of low Pt-loaded PEMFCs. Dr. Kırlıoğlu’s work spans practical solutions and insights, aiming to address the efficiency and cost challenges in both fuel cell technology and energy storage systems. This seminar will showcase his impact on advancing clean energy technologies through material innovation and engineering.

Speaker Biography: Ahmet Can Kırlıoğlu earned his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science & Nano-Engineering from Sabanci University in 2016 and 2023 respectively, focusing on energy conversion and storage research. He obtained his M.S. degree from the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at Boston University, USA, in 2018 working on developing a statistical imaging method that would assess the effectiveness of antibiotics against resistant strains of bacteria. During his internship at the National University of Singapore in 2015, he concentrated on the practical applications of 2D materials such as graphene and phosphorene, aiming to harness their properties for advancements in field-effect transistors. Dr. Kırlıoğlu’s significant contributions include developing membranes for anion exchange membrane fuel cells and innovating non-platinum group catalysts, specifically Fe N-C, for proton exchange membrane fuel cells, thereby contributing to more cost-effective and efficient fuel cell technologies. His work in fuel cells, evidenced by a wide array of scientific publications and conference presentations, reflects a pragmatic approach to addressing key energy storage and conversion challenges. Beyond academia, Kırlıoğlu entered the industry as an R&D engineer at Appsilon, a lab-grown diamond producer, and co-founded Kanzy, an AI-powered financial assistant, demonstrating his ability to translate scientific research into practical, market-driven solutions.
