It is our distinct pleasure to announce that the project led by Assist. Prof. Gamze Turunç Bayrakdar from the Department of Psychology has been awarded funding through The Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) Small Grants Program for Early Career Scholars.
Within the scope of the 12-month project titled “Changing Family Roles under Acculturative Stress: Parentification and Adolescent Outcomes in Forced Displacement”, the study aims to examine how acculturative stress experienced by Syrian refugee mothers relates to adolescents’ psychological, behavioral, and cultural adjustment outcomes in the context of forced migration. The project investigates the role of parentification in linking maternal acculturative stress to adolescents’ internalizing and externalizing symptoms, prosocial behaviors, and cultural orientations, while also exploring perceived social support as a potential protective factor. The findings are expected to contribute to the scientific understanding of child and adolescent development in refugee families and provide a strong empirical foundation for future large-scale research initiatives.
