Dr. Hotamisligil’s research efforts focus on the molecular and genetic basis of common and complex metabolic diseases. His research examines the identity and molecular mechanisms of adaptive response systems in health and disease, with a particular focus on metabolism.
He is an internationally recognized leader who has made many seminal contributions, including discoveries defining the inflammatory origins of obesity and diabetes, which form the foundations of the field of immunometabolism.
His research group identified the endoplasmic reticulum as a key site of metabolic and immunometabolic adaptation, revealed key mechanisms associated with the ER’s metabolic functions, and identified molecules capable of targeting the ER and correcting its functions.
Dr. Hotamisligil’s studies have also led to the identification of new lipid and peptide hormones and their mechanisms of action. He pursues interdisciplinary research and collaborations aimed at developing novel preventive and therapeutic strategies against chronic metabolic and inflammatory diseases.
These research programs have supported several drug-development platforms, some of which are currently in clinical trials. His published work includes 215 scientific manuscripts, which have received more than 96,000 citations, with an h-index of 120, and have resulted in multiple patents.
Dr. Hotamisligil has received numerous fellowships and awards throughout his career, including recognition from the Markey Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the American Diabetes Association.
He is an elected member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences and the recipient of the 2004 TÜBİTAK Science Award.
His academic honors include the Outstanding Scientific Accomplishment Award of the American Diabetes Association, the Wertheimer Award of the International Association for the Study of Obesity, the Vehbi Koç Foundation Science Award, the Roy O. Greep Award for Outstanding Research from the Endocrine Society, the International Danone Prize, and the EASD–Novo Nordisk Foundation Diabetes Prize for Excellence.
Dr. Hotamisligil is also a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences.
