Kadir Has University Theatre Department at the IFTR 2025 Conference!

Kadir Has University Department of Theatre faculty members Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Günsür Yüceil, Dr. Özlem Hemiş and PhD Student Dafne Beri attended the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR) Conference hosted by the University of Cologne, Germany on June 11.

Within the scope of this year’s theme “Carnival”, they took part in the panel titled “From Troy to Pınarcık: Carnival, Ritual and Myth in Intercultural and Local Performances in Turkey”. The researchers presented their work carried out within the scope of two different TÜBİTAK 1001 projects.

The first presentation focused on the Troy Project developed by the Theater Research Laboratory (TAL), founded in Istanbul in 1988, within the framework of an intercultural and anthropological understanding of theater, and the activities related to this project. The presentation focused on TAL’s creative and investigative approach, its archival continuity and the intersections of carnivalesque elements with ritual and myth. TAL’s archive, which closed in 2002, is currently being digitized and analyzed by Kadir Has University Theater Department as part of a research project supported by TÜBİTAK. This presentation was part of an ongoing project led by Dr. Özlem Hemiş entitled “A Social Compromise Between Festival and Ceremony: Local, Current and Contemporary Functions of the Patterns of Traditional Village Spectacles in the Republic Day Celebrations of Pınarcık Village in Milas District of Muğla Province”.

The second presentation focused on the carnivalesque elements of the annual Republic Day celebrations in Pınarcık Village of Milas, Muğla.
