The new guest of the event series organized by Kadir Has University Psychology Department will be Assoc. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Hakkı Acar from Özyeğin University.
You can listen to Dr. Acar’s talk titled “Children’s Self-Regulation in the Context of Adult-Child Relationships” on Friday, September 30th between 10:30-12:00 in B-409.
Özet: Children’s ability to self-regulate is an important skill developed during the preschool years, given that the early schooling context requires children to direct their attention, control their emotions, and refrain from behaviors that are disruptive or harmful to others (McClelland & Cameron, 2012). Research findings have consistently shown that higher levels of self-regulation predict better social and academic outcomes (e.g., Blair et al., 2005; McClelland et al., 2007; Portilla et al., 2014). According to the Bioecological Model of human development (Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 2006), children develop self-regulation skills through bidirectional interactions between individual/biological characteristics (e.g., temperament) and environmental qualities such as parenting, classroom climate, and teacher emotional support (Grolnick et al. 2019; Koole et al., 2011; Rothbart, 2011). This talk aims to explain existing research regarding children’s temperamental characteristics and the qualities of their relationships with teachers and parents as predictors of children’s self-regulation.
