Kadir Has’s Vision Honors Science for 21 Years

The 21st Kadir Has Awards, a long-standing tradition of Kadir Has University that commands great respect in the scientific world, were presented to their recipients at a splendid ceremony held on Wednesday, March 25. Highlighting our founder Kadir Has’s vision of investing in education and people, the theme for this year’s awards was determined as the most critical field of our era: “Science, Technology, and Artificial Intelligence.”

Hosted by our Rector, Prof. Dr. Ayşe Başar, the ceremony featured the following honors:

Outstanding Achievement Award: Presented to Prof. Dr. Asuman Özdağlar, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, whose mathematical foundations for artificial intelligence and large-scale learning algorithms have gained worldwide acclaim.
Promising Scientist Award: Awarded to Asst. Prof. Fatma Güney, who has drawn significant attention with her innovative research in scene geometry and motion analysis.

This tradition, which began in 2003 with Prof. Dr. Ahmet Çakmak, continues to enhance Turkey’s academic prestige by honoring pinnacle figures of science—from Daron Acemoğlu to Şerif Mardin—for 21 years.

Iftar Program Held in Memory of Our Late Founder, Kadir Has

On the evening of Monday, March 16, a meaningful Iftar dinner was hosted at our Cibali Campus to mark the anniversary of the passing of our university’s founder, the esteemed philanthropist Kadir Has. To honor the cherished memory of our founder, who passed away on March 22, 2007, the program saw broad participation from our students, alumni, and neighbors from the surrounding community.

As part of the program, a Mawlid (prayer service) was recited for the late Kadir Has, providing a moment to once again remember the precious legacy he left to both our university and society.

In line with the vision of social responsibility inherited from its founder, Kadir Has University places great importance on building strong bonds with its students, alumni, and the local community, and on developing these ties in a sustainable manner.

BAGEP 2026 Awards Announced: Another Success for Our University

Kadir Has University continues its rise in the academic world, driven by its vision of scientific excellence. According to the results of BAGEP 2026, organized by the Science Academy to support promising young scientists, our university has once again secured its place on this prestigious list of awardees.

Significant Achievement in Literature

Asst. Prof. Deniz Gündoğan İbrişim, a faculty member of our university’s Core Program, has been honored with the BAGEP 2026 award for her high-quality and original work in the field of literature. Building on last year’s success—where four of our academics were recognized—our university continues to successfully champion its mission of encouraging young researchers.

The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Sabancı University. We congratulate our esteemed faculty member and wish her continued success in her academic endeavors.

Funded Projects

TÜBİTAK 3005 Project Support for PhD Student Asya Özer

The project titled “Family Year’ Discourses in Media and Social Perceptions of Family Policies,” led by our Communications PhD Program student Asya Özer, has been awarded funding under the TÜBİTAK 3005 program.

The study aims to provide an academic perspective on social policies by examining the “family” discourse constructed within media and political language.

Legal Thought and Naturalism: Nietzsche and Darwinism Discussed

In the “Faculty of Law Events IV” panel organized by the Kadir Has University Faculty of Law, the legal and political reflections of modern philosophy and evolutionary thought were examined under the main theme of “Legal Thought and Naturalism.” In the fourth session of the series, Prof. Dr. Manuel Knoll (Munich University — LMU, Political Theory and Philosophy) delivered a presentation titled “Nietzsche, Darwin, and Darwinism.” During his talk, he provided an in-depth analysis of the relationship between the intellectual worlds of Friedrich Nietzsche and Charles Darwin, as well as the significance of this interaction within political theory. Participants engaged in a comprehensive discussion on the impacts of modern philosophy on the understanding of nature and law, centered around Nietzsche’s complex relationship with Darwinian thought.

Legal Thought and Naturalism: On Hayy ibn Yaqdhan and Anaximander

The fifth session of the “Legal Thought and Naturalism” series, held as part of the “Faculty of Law Events V” panels at Kadir Has University, offered an interdisciplinary look into the origins of literature, philosophy, and law.

In her presentation titled “An Island of One’s Own: Hayy ibn Yaqdhan and the Origins of Orphan Children,” Dr. Cansu Muratoğlu (Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Law, Department of General Public Law) traced the footprints of naturalist thought within the perspectives of law and public law, specifically in the context of Ibn Tufayl’s classical work. Following this, Attorney M. İbrahim Ertuğrul delivered a talk titled “Anaximander: The Emergence of Man or the Crime Originating with Man,” providing a philosophical analysis of the human existence and the origins of the concept of crime in Ancient Greek philosophy.

Faculty of Law 2025–2026 Academic Year Wednesday Conferences

As part of the Kadir Has University Faculty of Law Wednesday Conferences, a presentation titled “The Scope and Limits of Custody Rights over the Child’s Personhood” was held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 4:00 PM. The conference featured Assoc. Prof. Ahmet Ayar, a faculty member of our Faculty of Law, as the keynote speaker.

Inspiring Interview on Entrepreneurship and Digital Transformation with Dr. Efe Çelebi

Our university hosted Dr. Efe Çelebi, a prominent figure in the entrepreneurship world and the founder of DentGroup and DentalPrices. The event, titled “From Traditional Business to Digital Venture: An Entrepreneurial Journey,” was held on March 11 at Cinema Hall A and drew significant interest from our students.

Independent Cinema Talks

Prof. Dr. Melis Behlil, a faculty member of the Kadir Has University Department of Radio, Television, and Cinema, participated as a speaker in the “Independent Cinema Talks” event, a significant hub for the film industry.

During the session titled “The Historical Development of Independent Cinema in Turkey,” Prof. Dr. Behlil shared insights on independent production processes in domestic cinema, historical milestones, and their contemporary reflections within the industry. Blending her academic expertise with industry practices, she offered the audience a profound perspective on the independent cinema ecosystem in Turkey.

45th Istanbul Film Festival Short Film Competition Selection Announced!

The Kadir Has University Department of Radio, Television, and Cinema (RTS) has achieved a significant milestone at the 45th Istanbul Film Festival, one of Turkey’s most prestigious film festivals. Works featuring the contributions of both our alumni and faculty members have been selected for the festival’s “Short Film Competition” category.

The film “GRAVITY” (YERÇEKİMİ), directed by our alumna Dalya Keleş and produced by our alumna Didem Nur Yayman, along with the film “EVERYTHING REMAINING BETWEEN US” (ARAMIZDA KALAN HER ŞEY), edited by our faculty member Tuvana Simin Günay, will meet with festival audiences and the jury. We congratulate our graduates and esteemed faculty member and wish them success on their festival journey.

“Apollo by Day, Athena by Night” Wins Awards in 4 Categories

The film “Apollo by Day, Athena by Night” (Gündüz Apollon Gece Athena), written and directed by our RTS Department faculty member Emine Yıldırım, has made a significant impact in the world of cinema, winning awards in four different categories. The production, which stands out for its unique narrative and aesthetic language, was honored with the Best Film, Best Screenplay, and the Giovanni Scognamillo Fantastic Film awards. Additionally, Barış Gönenen received the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in the film. We congratulate our esteemed faculty member on this multi-faceted achievement and wish her continued success.

“Is That All?” Wins Awards in 3 Categories

The film “Is That All?” (O Da Bir Şey Mi?), directed by our RTS Department faculty member Pelin Esmer, has returned with victories in three different categories from prestigious award ceremonies. The production, which stands out for its artistic excellence and strong cast, was honored with the following awards:

Success Crowned with a Silver Mixx Award at Genç Mixx

One of our senior students, İlayda Tosun, continues to make us proud with her achievements. Standing out for her creativity, disciplined work, and contribution to team spirit, İlayda achieved significant success in the Genç Mixx competition alongside her teammates, Azra and Yaren.

In this prestigious platform where young communicators showcase their projects, the team drew attention with their original ideas and impressive presentations. They were rewarded for their hard work by returning from the competition with the Silver Mixx Award.

First Prize at A Awards Junior

Students of Kadir Has University achieved a significant victory at the A Awards Junior, a competition that brings together the young talents of the advertising world. Making a difference through their determination and the confidence they placed in their strategic planning, the “Plan A” (A Planı) team—consisting of Onur Arslan, Berra Kınacı, Şeyma Kalaycı, Utku Yılmaztürk, and Bihter Özcan—made us all proud by securing the first-place title. We wholeheartedly congratulate our team for reaching the top with their creative strategies and execution skills.

Second Prize at A Awards Junior

Another achievement that elevates our track record of success took place on the second-place podium of the A Awards Junior competition. We congratulate the “Beşer” team—consisting of Şevval Kurtul, Arif Kaya, Defne Ergün, and Helin Ekmekçioğlu—who secured second place with their outstanding performance. We wish them continued and increasing success throughout their professional careers.

The third-place title secured at the A Awards Junior competition has been recorded as a significant achievement. The “Cava” team—consisting of İkbalnur Uzun, Sena Ünübol, İlayda Tosun, and Murat Aydın—drew great attention with their seamless teamwork, disciplined approach, and creative solutions throughout the competition.

The Future of Advertising is Taking Shape at Cibali

The “Academics Workshop,” organized by the Turkish Foundation of Advertising (Reklamcılık Vakfı), brings together the academic vision of the communication and advertising world with industry professionals on a common ground of collective intelligence.

The latest brief for our Atölye (Workshop) agencies came through a partnership between Domino’s and the Senfonico Agency. We have successfully completed a highly entertaining and competitive process where creativity spoke for itself and innovative ideas raced against one another.

Peter Watkins: No Short Cuts

The independent cultural initiative Görültü, in collaboration with Sinematek / Sinema Evi, organized Turkey’s first-ever Peter Watkins retrospective. Focusing on the English director who passed away in October 2025 at the age of 90, the program titled “Peter Watkins: No Short Cuts” featured screenings of 11 films, including Punishment Park, The War Game, Edvard Munch, The Journey, and La Commune (Paris, 1871). Prior to the screenings of The War Game and Culloden, Asst. Prof. Esin Paça Cengiz delivered a presentation and engaged in a Q&A session with the audience.

Digital Wellness Discussed at the Department of New Media and Communication

The Department of New Media and Communication hosted Esra Özgür, the founder of Dijital Esenlik, for a workshop titled “Digital Wellness: Is Another Digital Possible?” During the event, Özgür shared her insights on digital practices centered around individual well-being and her visions for building a healthier digital future. In this workshop, which redefines our relationship with technology, the doors to a balanced life in the digital world were opened.

Interview Workshop: Ethical Codes of Asking the Right Questions

The “Interview Workshop,” organized by the Department of New Media and Communication, hosted Heja Bozyel, the founder of Rast Magazine. Sharing her industry experience with students, Bozyel provided a comprehensive perspective on the cornerstones of a high-quality interview: effective questioning techniques, active listening skills, and professional ethical responsibilities. Enriched with practical insights, the event introduced students to the nuances of journalism and content creation.

Sorbonne Nouvelle University GAMER Conference

Assoc. Prof. Balca Arda, a faculty member of our Department of Visual Communication Design, participated in the conference titled “Technologies Numériques et Genre en Arts et Médias: Création, Représentations, Réception,” held at Sorbonne Nouvelle University. During the event, Dr. Arda shared the findings of her research regarding the impacts of generative artificial intelligence on user experience.

VCD210 Design Theories

As part of the VCD210 Design Theories course, led by our Visual Communication Design Department Head, Dr. Emre Sünter, we hosted sociologist and researcher İpek Oskay in our department. Oskay delivered a presentation titled “Sound Ecology: Interaction Design Beyond Language,” exploring new dimensions of design and communication.

VCD322 Visual Communication Design Research

As part of the VCD322 Visual Communication Design Research course, led by our faculty member Merve Akdağ, we hosted researcher and creative strategy manager Ersan Avcı in our department. Avcı delivered a presentation titled “Using Ethnographic Research Methods to Design Visual Communication Processes,” providing students with valuable insights into the intersection of research and design strategy.

Açık Radyo – Participatory Models in Science Communication

Our Visual Communication Design Department Head, Dr. Emre Sünter, participated in a program organized by Açık Radyo. Within the scope of his TÜBİTAK 3501 project, titled “Designing a Participatory and Interactive Science Communication Model: A Case Study on Microalgae,” Dr. Sünter shared alternative scenarios to classical communication models. He discussed how scientific knowledge can engage with society through the participation of various actors centered around an environmental issue.

Citizen Science Workshop – TÜBİTAK 3501 Project Presentation

Our Visual Communication Design Department Head, Dr. Emre Sünter, delivered a presentation on his TÜBİTAK 3501 project, titled “Designing a Participatory and Interactive Science Communication Model: A Case Study on Microalgae,” at the event “Citizen Science Workshop: The Interdisciplinary Journey of Participatory Knowledge – Methods, Case Studies, and Art,” which brought together academics from various disciplines.

Our Student Aliyah Al Khouly Organized a Children’s Workshop at the Diriyah Biennale

Aliyah Al Khouly, a senior student in our Visual Communication Design Department, conducted a workshop titled “Animated Alphabets” at the Diriyah Biennale in Saudi Arabia. The workshop, which focused on children aged 8–14, presented a creative synthesis of typography and traditional animation.

The Sun Never Saw a Shadow – Group Exhibition

The works of our Visual Communication Design faculty member, Doruk Kumkumoğlu, were featured in the group exhibition titled “The Sun Never Saw a Shadow,” which showcased pieces from 38 artists working in the fields of photography and painting. Held simultaneously across two different venues in Ankara, the exhibition focuses on interdisciplinary dialogue and offers a multi-layered perspective on contemporary art production.

United Design Alliance – Online Seminar

Our Visual Communication Design faculty members, Zeynep Özüm Ak and Yunus Ak, participated in an online seminar organized by the United Design Alliance. During their presentation, titled “Absurd Possibilities for Sensing Design: Assignments, Workshops, and Experiments,” they showcased their experimental workshops and highlighted various projects developed by our students.

Battery Systems Course in Mechatronics Engineering Meets the Industry

The MTE428 Battery Systems course, part of our Mechatronics Engineering program, continues to bridge theoretical education with industry experience. For a guest lecture organized with the contributions of Asst. Prof. Vahit Barış Tavakol, we hosted Turgay Gücükoğlu, the Battery Controls Senior Team Leader at AVL Turkey, one of the leading organizations in the automotive sector.

During the event, AVL Turkey’s contributions to the global automotive world were discussed, and a comprehensive technical presentation was delivered on battery structures and battery management systems in electric vehicles. In line with our university’s project-based learning approach, students will take their first steps into the professional world by preparing their final projects based on real industrial battery cases, which they will present before a jury of experts from AVL Turkey.

A Proud Achievement from KHAS Interior Architecture

Dilara Geçgin, a student in our Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, has achieved significant success in im2025, the 8th annual Interior Architecture Student Project Competition organized by the TMMOB Chamber of Interior Architects, one of the most prominent organizations in the profession. We congratulate our student, who was awarded the Equivalent Honorable Mention in the 2nd-year category for her unique design approach, and we wish her continued success.

Module, On Connection

Kadir Has University Department of Theatre has added a new milestone to its international artistic collaborations. Over the past two months, seven acting students from our university and seven theatre artists and instructors from ArtEZ, one of the Netherlands’ most prestigious art institutions, conducted a joint study aimed at establishing an interdisciplinary bond. This process, which focuses on intercultural interaction and collective creation, has provided our students with a global perspective on their artistic vision.

Significant Success for Our Film and Drama Graduate Student Aybüke Avcı at SİYAD 2026

Our university’s success in cinematic production continues to be crowned with awards. Aybüke Avcı, a student in our Film and Drama Graduate Program, has made us proud by winning the “Best Domestic Film Released on Digital Platforms” award at the prestigious 2026 SİYAD Awards for her film “Domates Biber Depresyon” (Tomato, Pepper, Depression), which she directed. We congratulate our esteemed student on this great achievement.

Best Actress Award for Our Alumna Merve Asya Özgür at SİYAD 2026

Our Theatre Department alumna Merve Asya Özgür has reached a significant milestone in her artistic journey. We wholeheartedly congratulate our graduate, who was honored with the “Cahide Sonku Best Actress Performance Award” for her outstanding performance at the 2026 SİYAD Awards. We wish her continued and lifelong success in her artistic career.

(TAL) Theater Research Laboratory Archive Project – 4th Panel Meeting

The (TAL) Theater Research Laboratory Archive Project, which preserves the memory of our theatrical history, continues its series of panels. The fourth meeting of the panel series was held on March 23 at the Kadir Has University Cibali Campus. In this session, organized with the participation of academics and artists, in-depth discussions were conducted on the academic and artistic value of the TAL archive.

Special Performance for World Theatre Day (March 17–27)

World Theatre Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm on our university stage. As part of the March 27 World Theatre Day events, our first-year undergraduate Theatre students presented their performance titled “Junctions on Our Way” to the audience. The performance by our young talents received great acclaim, and the unifying power of theatre was felt once again across our campus.

“Digital Humanities and Theatre Science in Theory and Practice” Workshop

Our Theatre Department hosted a significant event as part of international academic mobility. On March 9, a workshop was held with guest academic Enes Türkoğlu from the University of Cologne, Department of Media and Theatre Studies, within the framework of the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility program. The workshop, which explored the interaction between digital technologies and theatre science, offered our students new horizons in the field of digital humanities.

Digitalization and Conservation Practices of Cultural Heritage Artifacts in Collaboration with Rezan Has Museum

The “Cultural Heritage in Context” course, conducted within the Department of Architecture, has undertaken an exemplary project for the preservation of tangible cultural heritage. Within the scope of the collaboration maintained with the Rezan Has Museum since 2023, the first comprehensive steps have been taken toward the digitalization of archaeological artifacts in the museum’s collection. This study aims to ensure both the digital archiving of cultural heritage assets and their preserved transmission to future generations.

Datça Özbel Marketplace Project

As part of the IND 302 course conducted within the Department of Industrial Design at the Faculty of Art and Design, Kadir Has University, a project titled “Redesigning the Özbel Producer Marketplace Experience” is being implemented in collaboration with Datça Municipality. Within the framework of this project, students carried out a field research visit to Datça to conduct stakeholder interviews and on-site observations.

The study, led by Asst. Prof. Turgut Çırpanlı and Asst. Prof. Javad Khalaj, is supported by the contributions of our alumna, Industrial Designer Bengisu Hallaç, and Datça Municipal Council Member Tuna Özalp. The project focuses on the producer marketplace operating in the Özbel neighborhood of Datça.

Prop Design Workshop with Taha Caner Leblebici

As part of the IND 103 Model Making Techniques course, led by Asst. Prof. Turgut Çırpanlı and Lecturer Barış Muluk at the Department of Industrial Design, Kadir Has University, we organized an EVA Prop Design workshop featuring our alumnus Taha Caner Leblebici.

Aiming to open new horizons in modeling curved and complex surfaces, the project introduced our students to EVA foam. They learned how to process the material, grew passionate about it, and developed fantastic works in a short time. After producing 1:1 scale masks of their favorite fictional heroes, our students presented their designs by wearing them.
