Prof. Dr. Erinç Yeldan Among the Preparers of TÜSİAD’s ‘New Climate Regime Report through the Lens of Economic Indicators’

TÜSİAD’s “New Climate Regime Report through the Lens of Economic Indicators” prepared by Prof. Dr. Erinç Yeldan from Kadir Has University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Atıl Aşıcı from Istanbul Technical University and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sevil Acar from Boğaziçi University was shared with the public. The report, which discusses the possible impacts of the new climate regime shaped by the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal on Turkey’s economy and trade, draws attention to the fact that the European Green Deal can be considered as a brand new opportunity for Turkey as a means of transformation aiming sustainable development as well as a risk.

Prof. Yeldan from Kadir Has University, who took part in the presentation session of the report, summarized his views on the report as follows: “The European Green Deal creates new opportunities for Turkey. An alternative Green Economic Transformation scenario that focuses on emission reductions, the use of funds for the green transformation of companies, and renewable energy and energy efficiency within the framework of a strategic transformation whose elements are determined decisively, could lead to significant improvements in both national income and greenhouse gas emissions. The green economic transformation strategy demonstrates that emission reduction targets can be achieved by increasing production and employment in the national economy and offers an important alternative to Turkey’s search for a sustainable development strategy.”

The report discusses the possible impacts of the new climate regime shaped by the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal on the Turkish economy and trade. The summary of the report, which examines policy instruments to combat climate change, includes the following statements: “Climate change is one of the most pressing global risks threatening sustainable development and the entire ecosystem. In this framework, combating climate change and adaptation to climate change are among the priority agenda items of all economies as well as international organizations and institutions operating in the environmental, economic and social fields, especially the United Nations. The European Green Deal can be considered as a risk for Turkey as well as a brand new opportunity as an instrument of transformation aiming at sustainable development. An alternative Green Economic Transformation scenario that focuses on emission reductions, the use of funds for the green transformation of companies and the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency within the framework of a strategic transformation whose elements are determined decisively, is envisaged to achieve significant improvements in both national income and greenhouse gas emissions. The green economic transformation strategy demonstrates that emission reduction targets can be achieved by increasing production and employment in the national economy and offers an important alternative to Turkey’s search for a sustainable development strategy.”
