Green_Iz Platform’s Website is Online!

The TÜBİTAK project titled “The European Green Deal: Threats and Opportunities for Turkey, International Comprehensive and Dynamic General Equilibrium Analysis”, led by Prof. Alp Erinç Yeldan from the Department of Economics at Kadir Has University. The website of the Yeşil_İz Climate Crisis and European Green Deal Monitoring Center, which will serve as a platform open to the entire public, was also launched.

The United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) noted that the average global temperature for the period 2010-2020 is 14.7 degrees Celsius, which is 0.8 degrees above the 20th century average. In this case, in order to keep the temperature of our planet around 15 degrees, limiting CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions that cause warming should be prioritized.

In December 2019, the European Union (EU) unveiled its plan to transition to a brand new production and consumption pattern strategy within the framework of the European Green Deal (EGC). Under this plan, the EU announced that it will pursue a strategy to transform industry, agriculture, energy and consumer behavior, putting the fight against climate change and environmental pollution, which threaten our planet, at the center of European society and politics. In line with the ECC plan, EU member states will be transformed into a “net zero carbon emission” economy by 2050.

The ECHR, which encompasses economic, social and ecological objectives in a holistic manner, is seen as a harbinger of a new era and is expected to affect EU member states as well as all countries that have trade, financial and political relations with the EU. The ECHR also poses risks and opportunities for Turkey, which exports nearly half of its goods to the EU.

Kadir Has University is hosting a project that aims to investigate the effects of the strategic transformation that the Constitutional Court will create in terms of the Turkish economy, and from a broader perspective, to examine and share with the public Turkey’s contributions to the global struggle against the climate crisis, its opportunities and possible consequences:

The project titled “The European Green Deal: Threats and Opportunities for Turkey, An International Comprehensive and Dynamic General Equilibrium Analysis”, led by Prof. Alp Erinç Yeldan. The website of the Yeşil_İz Climate Crisis and European Green Deal Monitoring Center, established within the scope of the project, was recently launched.

The project, supported by the TÜBİTAK ARDEB 1001 Program, will continue for three years. However, it is anticipated that the momentum and findings of the project will extend far beyond this timeframe. Yeşil_İz Platform is part of this project;

– To follow the European Green Deal (EGC) strategy and the Carbon Regulation at the Border (CCRB) mechanism, which is expected to be introduced as a key element of this strategy, in its historical development;

– To examine the expected effects of new commodity chains on the international division of labor of the CC;

– To examine the position of Turkey’s rival Emerging Market Economies in global economic competition and to analyze the threats and opportunities that the Turkish industry will face in global competition;

– Monitoring the medium- to long-term macroeconomic impact of the CC and SDI implementation on the Turkish economy as a whole;

– To discuss the possible counter-effects of the adjustment mechanisms created by Turkey’s attitude and policies in the face of the Constitutional Court process on EU growth and emission paths;

– Examine the costs and potential gains of the Constitutional Court to the Turkish financial community;

– It aims to highlight the urgency of green transformation for the Turkish economy with the participation of all relevant stakeholders.

The website of the Yeşil_Iz Platform, which aims to reach all institutions and individuals who are ready to contribute to a cleaner, livable future that respects all the resources of our planet and who are ready to contribute to the struggle for a fairer climate crisis in the light of science, will be used as an open platform where project findings, seminars and interviews with national and internationally competent experts on the subject will be shared with the whole public.
