New Directions in Turkish Film Studies Conference will be held face-to-face for the first time after the pandemic! The 22nd of the conference series is titled “Cinema and Women”. The deadline for applications for TFAYY XXII, which will be hosted by Kadir Has University Department of Radio, Television and Cinema on May 11-13, 2023, is February 26, 2023!
We dream of a conference full of enthusiasm where we will talk about, scrutinize and rediscover the historiography of Turkish cinema, the culture of criticism, periods, stars, films made by women, films about women, production channels, labor force, past and present, perhaps for the first time in detail with a female voice.
In recent years, we have been following academically supported reports, news reports and social media reports in which the structure of the industry has been evaluated from a gender perspective, and the imbalances, diversities and violations in terms of representation, labor force, awards and support have been voiced with the efforts of women filmmakers in national and international contexts. Similar to the strengthening ties between academic literature and audiovisual production with the rise of feminist film theory and criticism in the seventies, we observe that women filmmakers and film researchers are speaking out together with the influence of new feminisms after queer film theory.
This mobilization points to the need for new studies on Turkish cinema, and to works, people, characters, professions and periods that have not been talked about or written about (or that have been studied incompletely or in a one-dimensional or one-dimensional framework), and raises questions: What would we see if we revisited the history of cinema from a feminist perspective? How can a history of cinema centered on women be written? How do we define women’s cinema in Turkey? Can feminist approaches transform the language of film? Who tells women’s stories; how does cinema define womanhood? For whom are movies made; who watches movies? What are the connections or ruptures between the past and the present? How do festival screenings, awards, funding and support mechanisms function according to gender?
