Summary
Strategic reading helps second language learners to learn new information, acquire new language skills and become expert readers. Students also need to know when and how to use different strategies and to monitor and evaluate their comprehension, which refers to metacognitive awareness as reading is a dynamic and active process. The focus of this session is to help our students read more effectively by inferring meaning and monitoring their comprehension. In this session, we will look at some studies on how able and less able students approach a text and what kind of reading strategies they use to understand what they read effectively. In the second part of the session, strategies will be proposed to enable students to correct and adjust their comprehension and analyze their understanding in order to become more conscious readers instead of being dependent on the teacher. The session will end with an exercise where participants will use the selected strategies to design some reading tasks and share their ideas with the other participants.
