Title: The Role of Small Traders in the Stock Market

Abstract: I present my research on the role of small traders in liquidity provision in the Turkish BIST30 index using 2019 data from Borsa Istanbul. The study explores how small traders, particularly passive ones who predominantly use limit orders, contribute to liquidity at both daily and intraday levels. It finds that passive small traders play a significant role in providing liquidity, especially during market imbalances, and outperform aggressive small traders who tend to chase trends. The results highlight the important yet often overlooked role of passive small traders in maintaining market stability.

About the speaker: Ceyda Üstün holds a PhD in Economics from Central European University, with a focus on financial markets, market microstructure, and high-frequency trading. She is currently involved in market operations at Cboe Europe and previously served as a senior business analyst at Borsa Istanbul, where she led key projects on derivatives market development, pre-trade risk management systems, and market data analytics. Her academic research includes market microstructure, studies on liquidity provision, and retail trading behavior. She combines her business expertise with her academic background to drive innovation in the financial sector. Ceyda currently lives in Amsterdam, is a proud cat mother, and enjoys painting as an amateur artist.
