Reşat Kasaba, who has been a professor at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Affairs at the University of Washington since 1985, also served as the director of the same school between 2000-2010. Professor Kasaba also serves as the director of the Near and Middle East Studies Doctoral Program.

Resat Kasaba, who conducts research on the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, has written and edited seven books and more than 40 articles. The first part of these studies examines how trade between the Ottoman Empire and Europe in the 19th century changed the social and political balances in and around Izmir. The second part of Professor Kasaba’s studies focused on modern Turkey and addressed issues of ideology and identity. These studies are grouped under the title of Rethinking Turkey’s Modernization Project. Thirdly, Professor Kasaba examined the relations between empire and migration and investigated the important role played by nomadic tribal communities in the Ottoman Empire. An important dimension of these studies was the reactions of such communities to the increasingly centralized Ottoman state and how this relationship developed. Professor Kasaba’s most recent research examines how the urban/rural divide emerged in Turkey and how this divide continues to the present day and its political repercussions. Professor Kasaba’s research has been supported by leading institutions in the United States. Resat Kasaba is a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Dr. Reşat Kasaba is the former Director of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, Stanley D. Golub Chair in International Studies, and Professor. Recently, he has begun to explore the role of education in the formation of modern Turkish identity in the twentieth century. He teaches courses on the modern Middle East as well as world history in the modern era.

Kadir Has Promising Scientist Award

Dr. Banu Turnaoğlu Açan, Sabancı University

The Promising Scientist Award was presented to Sabancı University Faculty Member Dr. Banu Turnaoğlu for her original and striking studies on the formation and shaping of Turkish Republicanism within the scope of the intersection of political theory, global history of thought, international relations and Ottoman political thought.

19.
