Using fixed effects, and instrumental variable methodologies, we document that NPLs decline as house prices increase at the province level. Moreover, our results imply that the impact of house prices does vary across bank types and loan categories as state banks\u2019 consumer and commercial NPLs are not affected by the house price fluctuations. Our results highlight the importance of monitoring house prices along with conventional measures in assessing the financial health of the banks.<\/p>\n\n Konu\u015fmac\u0131 Hakk\u0131nda:\u00a0<\/strong>\u0130dil Ayberk Ayd\u0131n earned her PhD degree in Finance at Bilkent University in August 2022. She is broadly interested in the intersection between real estate markets, financial intermediaries and corporate finance. In particular, she studies the impact of house prices on banks\u2019 lending and financial stability. In addition, Dr. Ayd\u0131n is interested in the housing supply dynamics. During graduate school, she worked as a consultant for the World Bank Ankara office and also as a senior analyst in the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey Human Resources Office.
