CITATION
When supporting your thesis statement, it is perfectly acceptable to use the work and ideas of other people. However, when doing this there are some important rules you must follow. First of all, your paper should be focused on your analysis of the subject, so the amount of borrowed work and ideas should be limited to about 10-15 percent. More importantly, whether you are quoting, paraphrasing or summarizing someone else’s work you must let the reader know where this information originated. In other words, tell your audience where you found the information; this is known as citation.
In academic writing there are generally two places where we use citation: in-text as a quote, paraphrase or summary and at the end of the paper in the works cited page. Remember, when ever we use someone else’s work we must give them credit. This is done both in the actual text immediately after the quote, paraphrase or summary and then again at the end of the paper where you list your references. Failure to give credit to the original author is plagerism and is a serious offense at Kadir Has University.
Different disciplines employ different styles of citation, so make sure you know which style your department and instructors require and cite accordingly. The following list of websites should be helpful in developing proper citation skills:
