Istanbul Studies Center Nasıl Yapmalı? Emek Sineması 27 April 2012 The second panel of Nasıl Yapmalı? (Whats to be Done?)panel series was held on 27 April 2012. With the participation of Asist. Prof. Dr. Melis Behlil (Kadir Has University) as moderator, and Gökhan Akçura (writer- researcher), Can Atalay (Attorney, Chamber of Architects of Turkey), Senem Aytaç (Turkish Film Critics Association) and Azize Tan (Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts) as speakers, the panel concentrated on proposals and suggestions for the future of Emek Film Theatre. In the questions and answers section of the panel, both the panelists and the audience accentuated the urgent need for a democratic, legitimate and participatory urban governance which, while making decisions, will take into account concerns, considerations and suggestions of the inhabitants of the city. |

Istanbul Studies Center Hosted Mark Wyers. 5 April 2012 As the third guest of Conversation series, Istanbul Studies Center hosted Mark Wyers, the director of Academic Writing Center, on 5 April. Mark Wyers gave a presentation with the title "Re-thinking Spaces of Resistance:The Red Light Districts of Istanbul in the Early Republic of Turkey."

Istanbul Studies Center Launched “Nasıl Yapmalı? (What's to be Done)” Panel Series Istanbul Studies Center launched a new panel series, “Nasıl Yapmalı?” (What’s to be Done?), in a time when the questions and problems of urban transformation has been broadly discussed from conferences to media, academia to politics, demonstrations to art practices. As a research center at the center of the urban transformation, ISC aims to intervene in these discussions on an academic level. The first panel of the series “Tarihi Yarımada’nın Korunması” (The Preservation of the Historical Peninsula) was held on 15th of March 2012. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ahunbay (Istanbul Technical University), Prof. Dr. Füsun Alioğlu (Kadir Has University),Yeşim Börek (İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality) Prof. Dr. İclal Dinçer (Yıldız Technical University, Mehmet Gürkan (Ministry of Culture and Truism) and Dr. Halil Onur (Istanbul Cultural and Natural Sites Management Directorate ) participated the panel with their presentations. |

Urban Imaginaries Workshop, Istanbul, co-organized by Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Istanbul Studies Center

24 March 2011 The Istanbul Studies Center hosted a group of graduate students in European Studies from the Aarhus University (Denmark) in March 2011. A workshop was organized on the 24th for the students, who all currently work on various topics related to Turkey and the city of Istanbul. Levent Soysal (Director of the Istanbul Studies Center and Chair of the Department of Communication), Sedat Aybar (Director of Africa and Middle East Research Center and Chair of the Department of Economics), and Çağla Diner (Assistant Professor in International Affairs) participated in the workshop with presentations related to their recent research on Turkey and Istanbul. |

Kadir Has University Hosted Columbia University’s Golden Horn Revitalization Project,
11-20 March 2011
With the support of the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Istanbul Studies Center of Kadir Has University, the Columbia students of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP) are working on a revitalization project for the Golden Horn. The project aims to develop new urban renewal ideas for the districts of Golden Horn with a purpose of improving the local use of the coastline. The geographical scope of the project extends from the Ataturk Bridge to the Golden Horn Bridge, including the Cibali campus of Kadir Has University. Between 11-20 March, the group held meetings and workshops together with the faculty members from Kadir Has University. |

Istanbul Studies Center International Symposia Contemporary Perceptions of Byzantium

The first Istanbul Studies International Symposium onContemporary Perceptions of Byzantium, co-sponsored by Kadir Has University and Koç University, with the support of the Rezan Has Museum, was held 19-21 November 2009 at Kadir Has University’s Cibali Campus and the Koç University Anatolian Civilizations Research Center in Beyoğlu.As one of its first major events, the ISC considered it appropriate to host a conference on the idea of Byzantium today: an opportunity for Byzantinists and scholars and public figures in other areas to talk about the various ways that Byzantium is being represented, written about, and resisted in current discussions of Istanbul’s past, present, and future.

“Thinking: X” Lecture Series Thinking: The Ruin

In May 2009, the Istanbul Studies Center at Kadir Has University organized Thinking: the Ruin, the first in a series of rigorous and theory-driven lectures by a selected group of innovative scholars and artists willing to think beyond the narrow confines of traditional disciplines, and offered as a sequence delivered over the course of a week. The lectures in any given Thinking: x series all spring from or reflect upon the same image, idea or topos. The proceedings of Thinking: the Ruin was published as an edited volume by the Rezan Has Museum in 2010. |
