In honor of the fifteenth anniversary of the founding of our university, a reception was held along with the opening of an exhibition titled “From Factory to University: A Building’s Transformation.” The exhibition, curated by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Bülent Kahraman, is a reflection on how the Cibali Tobacco Factory was restored and reopened as Kadir Has University.
In 1997, under the leadership of the philanthropic business leader Kadir Has, the university was founded by the Kadir Has Foundation. In the beginning, the student body consisted of just four students, but after fifteen years, our student population has grown to include more than 5,000 students and nearly 6,000 graduates.
Our institution, one of the most renowned of the 62 foundation universities in Turkey, is a foundation university in the true sense of the word, and our future has been secured by Kadir Has’ donation of his property to the Kadir Has Foundation.
Day by day we are becoming an academic institution holding to the highest global standards, and our guiding philosophy is that students should be taught how to think critically and ask pertinent questions while developing academically and becoming socially aware. To achieve this, we have shifted from a disciplinary-based model of organization to a model that is inter-disciplinary.
The reception held in celebration of our 15th anniversary took place at the Cibali campus, which was awarded the Europa Nostra award, and was attended by Can Has, head of the Board of Trustees, and Nuri Has, head of the Kadir Has Foundation, as well as the university’s president, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aydın, and our academic and administrative personnel.
In his speech, Nuri Has noted that “Kadir Has University has been attended by a total of more than 13,600 students. As an institution of higher education, we are dedicated to progress and transformation, as well as to being a leader rather than a follower of higher education practices around the world. To achieve this,” he added, “We will not hesitate to take radical steps.”
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aydın emphasized in his speech that Kadir Has University holds a prestigious position among universities in Turkey, and that as a genuine foundation university, our institution has held to the philanthropic life philosophy of our founder, Kadir Has.
In his speech, Prof. Dr. Hasan Bülent Kahraman noted that the exhibition he curated reflects on “the theme of reconciling with the original. For us, as individuals seeking to interpret today’s world and shape the future, we need to be aware that originals and reproductions are inherently intertwined, and it is our task to take on the responsibility of bringing the past into the future.”
The ceremony concluded with the screening of a film prepared by the Pusula Academy and the cutting of the anniversary cake.
