About the Writing Center
Mission
In support of Kadir Has University’s dedication to academic excellence, our mission is to provide the best in writing support to all undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members and university staff. Writing is a process of discovery and learning, about both ourselves and the world around us, and we believe that achieving excellence in writing is the key not only to a successful career but also personal development. In achieving our own goals, the team at the Kadir Has University writing center holds to the principles of mutual respect, equality and academic rigor.
Policy
The Khas Writing Center cannot and will not:
- Simply correct your mistakes and proofread your writing.
The Khas Writing Center can and will:
- Help you improve your writing by pointing out where you are having grammatical difficulties, so that you learn how to find and correct your own mistakes;
- Through one-on-one tutorials, help you build confidence with your knowledge of sentence-building, paragraph writing and essay organization;
- Help you improve your understanding and usage of academic English; and,
- Provide writing support for your CVs, applications and cover letters as you set out for studies abroad or prepare to launch your career.

The Writing Center is at the Cibali Campus, B Block, on the first floor next to the classroom 107.

Mark Wyers, Director
Born and raised in California, Mark received his BA in English from the University of Tampa, and went on to complete his MA at the University of Arizona. He has been teaching English and writing for nearly 15 years, and in recent years he has begun doing translations of Turkish literary works into English as well. His translations have been published in journals in the U.K. and Holland, and he has translated plays and films which have been staged and screened at cultural events and film festivals held in Istanbul.

N. Buket Cengiz
Buket received her BA from the Istanbul University Faculty of Letters and her MA in American Culture and Literature from Kadir Has University. She has published columns and articles in various international and national journals including The Middle East, Film International, Senses of Cinema, the Moving Arts Film Journal, Virgül and Panorama Khas. Her translations from English and Russian of works by such writers as Edward Said and John Berger and poets such as Konstantin Simonov and Yevgeny Yevtushenko have been published in a variety of journals and newspapers, as well as her articles in refereed journals of Istanbul University and Marmara University. Since 2003, Buket has been writing on culture for the Sunday supplement of the newspaper Radikal. She has worked for Kadir Has University’s Department of American Culture and Literature Department as well as the university’s English Language Unit. She is a full-time tutor at the Writing Center and conducts research in the sphere of literary and cultural studies for her PhD dissertation for Leiden University, Institute of Area Studies, in Leiden, Netherlands.
