What for a career?
Every year thousands of students graduate from the university and head for a professional career. As you are deciding about what you will be doing in life, the critical step is to decide upon what type of a career is good for you. In other words, what are YOU suitable to?
A number of studies with students demonstrate that many students experience lack of information, conflict, and decision taking worries about profession selection. Many exhibit a negative attitude, feel under-qualified and assume a fatalist position." I do not even know what I want to do- I will be never be able to do what I really want- I will not be succesfull in this field- It is so difficult to get the job I want, one needs to know the right people for it". Thoughts like these will have a negative impact on you, they will stop you from taking an initiative and starting and action. Whereas starting with positive and realistic thoughts will lead to a positive outcome. " will chose a profession that I like and that I am capable of" " I can prepare an action plan to get the job I want and work and improve in this direction" Aren’t these more convincing?
What to consider when making a career plan?
The work atmosphere
In which environment would you prefer to work? Outdoor or office? Hospital or frequent travelling?
Your personal interests
Do you enjoy driving? Helping humanity? Looking after animals? Are you the adventurous type? Do you feel happy providing care for people in need? How much do you care if your ahnds get dirty?
Weekdays from 9 to 6 ? Can you tolerate interchanging shifts between day and night or having to work during the weekend? Do you mind doing extra time ? Your decision will affect your social life- while your friends are partying at a club you might have to be still at work ?
How high do you aim in your acreer? Do you want to reach the top? What shall you need to get there, do you have the necessary qualities and abilities to go that far?
Do you enjoy the idea of wearing a uniform? Do you prefer to dress up to go to work? Or are you the casual type?
Would you like to have a career that requires plenty of thinking, reasoning, and creativity that keeps you occupied almost all of your time? Would you enjoy facing a new challenge every day? How interest are you in learning a new technique every day, which in turn broadens your world vision continuously?
All of the above are factors to consider while choosing a career. Yet there is more to think about. As you start your work life other factors like medical aid, pension schemes, bonuses, paid leaves, support for dependants and so and so fort will become important.
One important problem is the lack of career opportunites that are suitable for you. It is important to be among the lucky minority of people who know what they want. Today, unfortunately most of us simply do not know "how to be succesfull" in our careers. On the other hand, one most nor forget that we have some well 40 years ahead of our retirement- it’s a pretty long time for regretting!
Every day of the week, around the world some thousands of people resign from their jobs because they are nor content with their job or their working conditions. They move on from one job to the toher in the hope finding somewhere some job that they will "really" like. Not knowing actually what they want or what they need, this does not happen most of the times, and the vicious circle of problems, dissatisfaction and new job search goes on and on.
If you can not define a "profession" or a "job" that you sincerely enjoy and motivates you, this endless quest for the "perfect job" will never end, only to bring more frustration every day, week, month and year. In better words, you will only "psend time" until your retirement. Ofcourse, by the time that day arrives you will already be fed up and frustrated with many differenet jobs, and everything related to them. For a fulfilling, rich life you should find out the right career for yourself, one where you are eager to go to work, to produce, to learn, to improve and excel yourself. The experiences one gains at work, also count in life, the more borader are your knowledge, vision andabilities, the richer will be your life in every aspect.

Your career journey is just starting now, and theres a long way to go. Whatever guidance you receive should be constructive. You should always aim for what your heart desires the most. Your mentors should give the last word to you when deciding on which career to choose. This is not only for the actual moment but for the sake of a hereafter healthy family life as well.
In the first instance the switch from student life to working life may feel like a dramatic change. Its not always very easy to adapt to strict rules, timely duties, scheduled work hours and deadlines, defined results and deliverables, right after the long habit of plenty of leisure time, holidays and self defined work hours of student life. However, keep in mind that those days are over, and try to make the best out of every new experience you gain at work- after all, this is YOUR career! Know what you want, always do your best and remember what you will gain in the end.
