Professor Mustafa Aydın was graduated from the Department of International Relations, Ankara University in 1988. He obtained his M.A. in International Relations and Strategic Studies (1991) and his Ph.D. in Political Sciences and International Relations (1994) from Lancaster University, UK. He later joined Ankara University’s Faculty of Political Sciences in 1995 as assistant professor, becoming associate professor in 1999 and full professor in 2005. He was the founding head of the Global and Regional Studies Program. Between 2005 and 2009, he worked for the University of Economics and Technology as the Head of the Department of International Relations. Professor Aydın was appointed as Rector of Kadir Has University in February 2010.
Prof Aydın is also the President of the International Relations Council of Turkey, Governing Board Member of the World Council for Middle Eastern Studies and OECD International Management of Higher Education Programme, as well as member of European Academy of Sciences and Art.
Professor Aydın was Coordinator of the International Relations Module at the National Security Academy of Turkey (2002-2008), Head of the Central Asia Desk at the Centre for Eurasian Strategic Studies (1999-2003), Director of the International Policy Research Institute (2005-2010), Deputy Chairman of the International Commission of Eminent Persons on the Caucasus and the Caspian (2007-2008), and Co-Coordinator for the International Commission on the Black Sea (2010-2011).
He was also a member of the Governing Boards of the Centre for International Political and Economical Relations (1997-2005) and Centre for Strategic Research and Study (2003-2005) of Ankara University. In addition, Dr. Aydın served on the Presidential Working Group on Economy and Foreign Policy (2003-2009), the Planning and Evaluation Board of the Turkish General Staff’s Strategic Research and Study Centre (2003-2011), the Advisory Board of the Centre for Strategic Research of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2000-2010), the Economic Foreign Relations Research Commission of the State Planning Organization of Turkey (2005), the Political Sciences Study Group of Turkish Social Sciences Research Council (2005-2006), the Cankaya District Human Rights Board (2007-2009).
He also served as an advisor for the International Centre for Black Sea Studies (2003-2011) and the Hellenic Center for European Studies (2005-2010). He also occasionally worked as an Election Observer for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kyrgyzstan, Palestine, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.
Drawing on his extensive experience, Dr. Aydın has thought at the universities of Ankara, Athens, Atilim, Bilkent, Baskent, Dokuz Eylul, Gazi, Bilkent and the University of Economics and Technology. He has also lectured at the Turkish National Security Academy, NATO Defense College, Turkish Military Academy and the George C. Marshall Centre for European Security, teaching such courses as International Politics, Theories of International Relations, Defense and Strategy, International Security, Globalization and International Relations, Turkish Foreign Policy, Revolutionary Movements in International Relations, Political History and International Terrorism.
As a guest researcher and visiting professor, Dr. Aydın has worked at the University of Michigan (1998), Harvard University Kennedy School of Government (2002) and National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2003), in addition to the Richardson Institute for Peace Studies (1999) and the EU Institute for Security Studies (2003). He is a member of the International Studies Association (ISA), the International Relations Council of Turkey, Turkish Atlantic Council, Turkish Political Sciences Association, European Society for Central Asian Studies (ESCAS), Regional Network of Strategic Studies Centres and International Network on Regional Security.
Dr. Aydın, who had previously served as an editor for the Turkish Yearbook of International Relations, Review of International Affairs, Ankara Papers, and the Journal of Strategic Research, is currently Editor-in-Chief of Uluslararası İlişkiler (International Relations) and is on the editorial and advisory boards of several national international scholarly journals.
Professor Aydın’s has published extensively on topics related to his academic interests, which include Theories of International Relations, Foreign Policy Analysis, Security Studies, Geopolitics, Strategic Studies, Foreign and Security Polices of Turkey, and Eurasian Politics.
