MA thesis process

  1. An MA thesis advisor is appointed within the second semester by the program director regardless of the student's standing in courses. The student is responsible for filing the advisor appointment form with the Graduate School.
  2. After the appointment of the advisor by the Graduate School, the student works under the advisor's supervision until the thesis defense.
  3. Before the thesis defense the student files the MA Thesis Defense Form with the advisor's approval, the URKUND Originality Report[1] approved by the advisor, a transcript with the program director's approval and a bounded copy of the thesis with the will be held a week before the thesis defense.
  4. The thesis must conform to the Thesis Writing Guidelines. The Graduate School may return the thesis to the student for corrections, if deemed necessary.
  5. Following the approval of the Graduate School, a thesis defense committee and a defense date is set. The student must deliver the thesis to the committee members at least two weeks prior to the defense date together with the MA Thesis Committee Members Delivery Report. The student must then file the signed MA Thesis Committee Members Delivery Report with the Graduate School.
  6. The thesis defense must be done at the set date. The advisor files the MA Thesis Defense Report with the Graduate School together with the reports of the committee members.
  7. Students who successfully defend their thesis must register with the Higher Education Council Thesis Center within one month after the defense date, fill out the “Tez Veri Girişi ve Yayımlama İzin Formu” and get a signed copy of it.
  8. The student must then file a copy of her thesis as a single pdf file on a CD with the Information Center and receive a signed Thesis Delivery Form.
  9. The student then files the “Tez Veri Girişi ve Yayımlama İzin Formu” and Thesis Delivery Form together with a copy of her thesis as a single pdf file on a CD and a printed and bound copy with the Graduate School. All the signatures on these copies must be completed before submission.

 

MA Project process

 

  1. An MA project advisor is appointed within the first semester by the program director regardless of the student's standing in courses. The student is responsible for filing the advisor appointment form with the Graduate School.
  2. After the appointment of the advisor by the Graduate School, the student works under the advisor's supervision until she completes and delivers her project to the Graduate School.
  3. The project must conform to the Thesis Writing Guidelines. The Graduate School may return the project to the student for corrections if deemed necessary.
  4. A printed and bound copy of the projects that are completed successfully should be delivered to the program director as well as to the Graduate School together with the Project Delivery Form.

 

Ph.D. Thesis process

  1. A Ph.D. thesis advisor is appointed within the third semester by the program director regardless of the student's standing in courses. The student is responsible for filing the advisor appointment form with the Graduate School.
  2. After the appointment of the advisor by the Graduate School, the student works under the advisor's supervision until the thesis defense.
  3. The student must have completed all coursework (including the seminars) and have a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00 in order to take the qualification exams. Students who had received an MA degree before starting the Ph.D. program must take the qualification exams by the end of the fifth semester at the latest and students who only received an undergraduate degree before starting the Ph.D. program must take the qualification exams by the end of the seventh semester at the latest.
  4. Students who meet the criteria for taking the qualification exams file the Ph.D. Qualification Exam Application Form with the Graduate School. The exam is directed and organized by the Ph.D. Qualification Committee. The committee members are appointed by the Board of Directors of the Graduate School.
  5. The Ph.D. qualification exam is composed of a written and an oral part. The Ph.D. Qualification Committee evaluates the student's success in the written and oral exams and decides whether the student is successful or not by simple majority. Students who are unsuccessful in the qualification exam take the exam again the following semester.
  6. For the students who were successful in the qualification exam, a thesis supervision committee is formed based on the advisor’s suggestion. A Thesis Supervision Committee Appointment Form is filed with the Graduate School. The student defends her thesis proposal, which consists of the goals of the research to be undertaken, the method and a work plan, in front of the Thesis Supervision Committee within six months. The student must deliver a copy of the thesis proposal to the committee members at least fifteen days before the oral defense together with a Thesis Committee Members Delivery Report. This report signed by the committee members must be delivered to the Graduate School by the student.
  7. The Thesis Supervision Committee decides to accept or reject the thesis proposal by simple majority and reports the outcome to the Graduate School. Students whose thesis proposal is rejected have the right to choose a new advisor and a new topic. In such a case a new Thesis Supervision Committee may be appointed. Students who change their advisor or topic present a new thesis proposal within six months.
  8. A student whose thesis proposal is accepted continues her thesis research under the advisor’s supervision. The Thesis Supervision Committee meets twice a year, once between January and June and once between July and December. The student is expected to present a written report on her research to the committee members prior to these meetings. This report summarizes the research done and presents a work plan for the next semester. The committee decides whether the student is successful or not. The outcome is reported to the Graduate School by the program director.
  9. Before the thesis defense the student files the Ph.D. Thesis Defense Form with her advisor's approval together with the URKUND Originality Report[2] approved by the advisor, a transcript with the program director's approval and a bounded copy of the thesis with the will be held a week before the thesis defense.
