Chair of the Department of Near Eastern Studies and Director of the Near Eastern Studies Program at Princeton University, received his undergraduate degree in Political Science and Economics and his PhD in Political Science from Istanbul University. He has taught courses and led seminars on late Ottoman political and diplomatic history and Turkish politics in Turkish institutions and in Columbia, Wisconsin, Michigan and Chicago Universities and has served as the Chair of the Ahmet Ertegün Foundation, Near East Studies Program and as Department Head. Prof. Hanioğlu is one of the leading authorities on the late Ottoman era and he has published some of the most important works on 19th century intellectual history. He was granted the TUBITAK Special Recognition Award in 2010, and his last publication was a biography of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s intellectual life. Prof. Hanioğlu was awarded the 2012 President’s Grand Prize for Culture and Arts in the field of history for bringing a universal dimension to Turkish history. Prof. Hanioğlu has been a member of the Board of Trustees of Kadir Has University since February 2013.
