Striving for Good Governance: Civil Society Strengthening and Youth Empowerment

The Center for International and European Studies (CIES) at Kadir Has University has launched a new project entitled “Striving for Good Governance: Civil Society Strengthening and Youth Empowerment” with the support of the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands under the Matra Program.

The project aims to strengthen the capacity of civil society based on the premise that a strong civil society is an essential pillar of democracy. It is unthinkable to attain democracy without good governance that requires the participation of all actors.

The project will result in two significant outcomes. The first is a Civil Society Organization (CSO) needs and assessment report based on a high level roundtable discussion and workshops. Needs assessment will be conducted to identify the most urgent priority needs. The second will focus on a range of capacity-building activities. Capacity-building will equip CSOs to ensure effective participation and enhance good governance. An NGO "Clinique" will be established to increase the knowledge and awareness of NGOs on most urgent needs to strengthen participatory democracy. Experts in CSOs will be endowed to assume their role as watchdogs, as advocates, and as mobilizers.

Youth are the specific focus of the project in order to increase their involvement in civil society. This objective will be advanced through a Young Leaders Training Program, and a Conflict Resolution and Consensus Building Training Program. Additionally, the project includes an internship program where students have a chance to do internships in selected CSOs.

The project activities run from 1 November 2017 till 1 November 2018.
