En/Gendering Foreign Policy

The Center for International and European Studies (CIES), the Gender and Women's Studies Research Center at Kadir Has University and the Kadir Has University Political Science and International Relations Student Club cordially held a conference on “En/gendering Foreign Policy” on Wednesday, 8 March 2017 at Kadir Has University to mark the occasion of International Women’s Day.

The issue of gender and foreign policy is an issue of fairness first and foremost. Women should be represented equally in all fields and foreign policy/international relations is no exception. For far too long politics, foreign policy and international relations have been associated with men and ideas of masculinity that are hegemonic in the West. This perpetuates an essentialist view of gender and does a disservice to both men and women. Perhaps more importantly, the exclusion of women also means that we do not have the benefit of women’s experiences and insights at a time when we desperately seek new perspectives on our current dilemmas. The seventeen years that have passed since the landmark UN Security Council resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security provides a lot of food for thought. Hence this event.

The conference structured around two round table discussions. The first provided an active practitioner’s outlook on the issue. The second panel consisted of experts, scholars, from Turkey, and abroad that provided their perspectives on the topic.
